Mallala - Peter Hall Memorial 6 Hour Regularity Relay
A team of drivers from DSCC headed over to South Australia for a couple of days racing on the bitumen circuit at Mallala.
Saturday was an open track day used for practice for Sundays Peter Hall Memorial 6 Hour Relay.
It was cold with some light showers most of the day. The track was wet until late in the afternoon.
Last year our drivers achieved lap times around 1:30. With the wet track they were at least 10 seconds slower.
One of the cars had a gearbox issue during the afternoon and was a doubtful starter for the main race.
Sunday started out icy cold but at least the rain had disappeared.
It was good weather for the drivers. Not so much for the crew standing at the pit wall.
The race is a regularity which means the drivers nominate their own lap time and try to achieve that on every lap. A point is awarded for every lap on the track and a bonus point if the driver is within one second of their nominated time. No points if they are ahead of the set time.
It is also a relay. Teams of drivers go out one at a time carrying a wristband that has to be passed from driver to driver during the event.
Ray Manson (our ring-in from Shepparton) was first on the track. He made a good start achieving has nominated time regularly. After 30 laps, 45 minutes Ray came in, the sash was passed to Neil Goudie, and another session was underway.
Neil kept close to his nominated time as well. 29 laps later at the pit wall we waited for Neil to come around so we could send him in for the changeover. Neil didn't come. He had pulled into the run off road in a cloud of smoke. A safety recovery vehicle went out with its fire extinguishers and towed the car into the pits.
There was a bit of delay on this changeover but Terry Maher was soon out on the track in a car borrowed for the weekend. With the rain and wet track on Saturday and limited practise Sunday morning Terry had to guess bit and nominated 1:35 as his lap time. Unfortunately. The estimate was slightly off. Terry achieved 1:36's regularly but had trouble getting the bonus points.
The last driver to go out was Peter Short with a gearbox problem discovered on Saturday. While unable to achieve his nominated time he was still gaining points and meeting regulation requirements before the two available drivers went out again to finish the day.
Ray and Terry completed the last hour without a problem.
At the end of the day the Deni team achieved 9th place out of 18 teams. The official results won't be available for a couple of weeks.
