Victorain Motorkhana Championship
Sat, May 27th, 2023

Event Review

Another action packed weekend was had by all those who attended Round 3, of the Victorian Motorkhana Championship held in Deniliquin on May 27, and the Victorian Khanacross Championship on Sunday May 28.
Drivers and spectators traveled from locations in Victoria and NSW to all enjoy the 2 days events.

The Saturday began with a combination of different classes all competing together from the technical special builds to slightly tamer road vehicles. Novices and experienced competitors all testing their skills on the same technical circuits with mixed results, the tight courses and sometimes complicated patterns made this event a real test of ability - car control and memory.

The emerging young talents took the limits up to their elder counterparts and in some cases youth triumphed over experience.
At times this became a master class with novice drivers learning to read the track and as the event progressed better times were evident.

The dappled sunlight helped to dry the track and supported the drivers to use their skills to their advantage, even if it was all to cover the timekeepers in a thick cloud of dust.

Local junior driver Xander Buchanan in a Chrysler Lancer, and Charlie Wilkin from Bendigo, in his Mitsubishi Lancer were amongst 2 of the younger drivers competing in both days and their style and finesse developed as the events progressed.

Sunday again began with the customary egg and bacon roll for breakfast cooked by the diehard canteen crew who support at every event held.
The Khanacross track proved to be a little tricky for some with some drivers forgetting to allow for the damp grass and unable to stop in the required zone incurring time penalties throughout the day.

Spectators were provided with some tremendous driving skills as competitors tried to find their ideal line to maintain speed and stay on the required track.
Matthew Caldwell from South Kingsville and Christopher Vissariou from Clayton Victoria took out first and second place respectively demonstrating a master class of driving skills.

Burnout of the day went to young local driver Ian Gray in a Holden Commodore even if it was unintentional.
Father, son rivalry with the Ware and Webb families was at its best with the sons cautious of beating their older counterparts and having to find their own way home.
Father daughter duo of Nicholas and Cassandra Charrett from Ferntree Gully in the Ford Fiesta XR4 provided a highlight even if it was Nicholas’s skid in the mud upon departing the vehicle.
